“Diversifying the agriculture business to adapt.”
GAINEY VINEYARDS, SANTA YNEZ, CALIFORNIA
Strategies:
- Assemble a team to evaluate the suitability of the land for vineyards, fruit and vegetable production, cattle ranching, and an existing Arabian horse operation.
- Prepare phasing plans for low-risk investments that can later be expanded based on market response and cash flow.
- Design and construct places that draw people to the land and create a regional destination, including a winery, a concert and wedding venue, a hall for private events, a farmers market, and a large picnic lawn.
Outcomes:
- An estate vineyard and winery that produce nationally recognized wines and that was named as “one of the best wineries to visit on California’s central coast” by Wine Spectator magazine.
- Successful, diversified, and revenue-producing agricultural enterprises including Arabian horse stables, 1,000-acres of rangeland for beef cattle, and 600-acres of farmland for organically grown fruits and vegetables.
- Preservation of the pastoral, agricultural landscape for which the valley is renowned.
